What it is
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth in the container after first use, which is what distinguishes it from single-use sterile water for injection (SWFI). In a laboratory setting, this preservation property makes it the standard diluent for work that spans multiple sessions.
Bacteriostatic vs. sterile water
Plain sterile water contains no preservative. Once a container is opened, it has no defense against microbial contamination. Bacteriostatic water’s preservative maintains its integrity across repeated draws — the reason multi-use research workflows specify it.
