How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis (COA)

Every peptide in our catalog is backed by a third-party Certificate of Analysis. If you’re evaluating research materials for your laboratory, the COA is the single most important document a supplier can give you — and knowing how to read one protects the integrity of your work. Here’s what each section means.

1. Identity verification

The COA should name the exact compound and its molecular characteristics. Mass spectrometry (MS) confirms the molecular weight matches the target sequence. If the observed mass deviates from the theoretical mass, the material may be degraded, truncated, or simply not what the label says.

2. Purity by HPLC

High-performance liquid chromatography separates the target compound from related impurities. The purity percentage — for our catalog, 99%+ on stocked items — reflects the proportion of the sample that is the intended peptide. Look for the chromatogram itself, not just the number: a clean single dominant peak is the signature of well-synthesized material.

3. The testing laboratory

A COA is only as credible as the lab that issued it. Independent third-party testing removes the conflict of interest inherent in self-issued certificates. Every COA in our COA Library is independently issued and searchable by product and batch.

4. Batch specificity

Purity is a property of a batch, not a product name. A supplier showing a single stock COA for all inventory isn’t showing you anything about the vial you receive. Match the batch number on your vial to the batch number on the certificate.
